Hello everybody, I’m Danika Quinn of the Actors Reporter and welcome to the TradeVine. It’s great to be back. Lots of great articles this week to keep you entertained and informed so if you missed any of the trades from this week, stay tuned. And remember, the trades can be found online so it’s easy to find past issues. Our goal here at the TradeVine is to help you stay informed and to keep up with the trades, such as The Hollywood Reporter, Daily Variety, and Backstage.

The Hollywood Reporter, October 7th, 2011 – The article is entitled “Premiere week winners and losers,” by Marisa Guthrie. And they’re off! Which TV horses look strongest out of the gate and which might need to be put down? Well, the winners are “Two and a Half Men,” with the debut of Ashton Kutcher, “How I Met Your Mother,” and on Fox, the premiere of “New Girl.” For the first time, Fox won premiere week in the 18-49 demographic, despite a 30% drop for the premiere of “Glee” and a somewhat soft 12.5 million viewers for “The X Factor.” The losers were nearly every returning competition show including, ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars,” and NBC’s “The Sing Off.” I personally enjoy USA Network’s “Necessary Roughness,” which I find to be unique and different, something TV should probably look more for.

Daily Variety, Monday, October 3rd – Did you know that Ravi Shankar was still around? For those of you who aren’t from the 60’s, Ravi Shankar is the master sitarist largely responsible for spreading the word about Indian music outside of India during the 1960s. As part of the celebration for his 91st birthday, Ravi Shankar performed at the Walt Disney Concert Hall presented by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association. Shanker now has a full white beard and has gained some weight, but the man can still make some beautiful music.

Back Stage, September 29th – October 5th – In the Advice section, “Taking the risk, but smartly,” by Paul Haber. Casting director Erica Palgon has no use for passive actors in an audition. if you want a callback, says the conventional wisdom, you’ve got to do something to stand out, to catch the viewer’s attention. Something unexpected. Something not explicit on the page. That may be fine advice, but demands a caveat. It’s not about making a joke or playing something just for a laugh. Instead, you must perform at the height of your intelligence. Stay in character. Casting directors don’t get excited about actors when they do only what’s on the page, so give them something extra within the confines of your character. This is where prop training comes in handy.
