Back Stage, October 19th – 4 Things to Consider When Finding an Acting Teacher, By Carolyne Barry. The teachers you choose to train with will be a major influence in the development of your craft, and thus will have a strong impact on your career. But many actors choose teachers for the wrong reasons, one who is less expensive, offering some kind of deal, located close to where they live, or a teacher recommended by unqualified sources. These are not good reasons for such an important decision. Be in control of your career and those you are assembling for your team. Number 1, Research. Call several agents and talk to working actors and ask them whom they recommend. 2. Audit. Narrow down the field and arrange a meeting or an audit with at least three of your choices. 3. Ask Questions. About the teacher, the maximum number of student in the class, if you’ll work in every class, and cost and policies. And finally, number 4. Consider the chemistry. Is this teacher one that you can trust, that will inspire not abuse you, that you can plan to stay with for at least a year, and will give you the training you deserve?
