Back Stage, October 27th – November 2nd – In the Advice section, the article is entitled, “What skills are necessary to become a good host?” reported by Jessica Gardner. According to hosting teacher, Joseph Pearlman, your greatest asset as a host is your unique personality. The personality of the actor is nine-tenths of the performance. According to hosting coach, Suzanne Sena, a better question would be not what skills are needed, but what traits. Skills are something that can be taught, traits are qualities a person naturally possesses. To be a good host, you have to be very comfortable in your won skin. Patricia Stark, hosting teacher, adds that the best communicators are really the best listeners. Listen closely during interviews with guests, during auditions, when taking direction from producers, etcetera. Also, be in the moment with your active listening. And lastly, Marki Costello, at Become A Host dot com, says that to be a great host, you have to have a strong brand, a niche, and a strong point of view. You have to have something that makes you unique and different from everybody else.
The Hollywood Reporter has Special November 2011 issue on both the American Film Market and a look at the status of films all over the world. The articles include meeting The Rising Stars of the American Film Market, and includes an AFM A-list of films, and a State of the Film World looking at ten global markets reaching the conclusion that Scandinavia is hot and Russia and Germany are cooling.
Daily Variety, Tuesday, November 1st – Disney inks digital deals, by Sam Thielman and Andrew Wallenstein. The arms race between Netflix and Amazon intensified Monday with Disney-ABC Television Group announcing licensing deals with both parties. Disney renewed a deal first struck late last year with Netflix that includes skeins “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Desperate Housewives,” “Private Practice,” “Lost,” “Brothers and Sisters,” and “Ugly Betty.” One significant adjustment to the original pact, which analysts estimate at $200 million, is an extension of the delay between the airdate of the last episode of the most recent season licensed and when Netflix can begin carrying episodes. The delay is now 30 days.
Well, that’s it for the TradeVine this week. I’m Danika Quinn. Thank you very much for watching. And remember, You heard it through the Tradevine!
