Back Stage, January 7th – How To Know Which Pilot Season Roles You’re Right For, by Constance Tillotson. Most actors would love to see themselves in a series lead role. It is vital to understand the steps to get there. And to get real with yourself on what step you are on. Here are the four main roles and what you need to know about each. Series Regulars: If you have been a Series Regular, make sure you set a meeting with your team so they can actively go after the roles you are right for. For those of you who are not in this category and if you have the great opportunity of landing an audition, prepare, prepare, PREPARE! Guest Stars: The more guest stars, the higher the step you are on. What this tells your agent, casting, and the network is you have cultivated the skills to pull off different characters. Possible Recurring: The more guest stars, the higher the step you are on. What this tells your agent, casting, and the network is you have cultivated the skills to pull off different characters. Co-Stars: Co-stars are not easy to book because usually you only have a few lines to show the character. Be as creative as possible with these roles. Have fun! Create the environment of the scene.

Hollywood Reporter, January 8th – Home Entertainment Spending Rises for First Time in Five Years, by Thomas K. Arnold. The news, released on the eve of the International Consumer Electronics Show, was met with a collective sigh of relief from the Hollywood studio executives, as it reverses a downward trend that had plagued the industry since 2007. Also reported was that UltraViolet registrations have surpassed 9 million. UltraViolet is a studio-backed initiative to boost discs sales by providing disc buyers with a digital locker to store their purchased content in the cloud. It’s seen by many as the ultimate “added value” to disc purchases, since it allows consumers to access their purchased content anytime, anywhere, on a wide variety of devices, from smartphones to tablets.

Daily Variety, January 8th – Panasonic presses for interactive TVs, by Andrew Wallenstein. Broadcasters aren’t the only ones touting second-screen apps. Panasonic unveiled plans to add more interactive features into its line of Viera TVs, including second-screen features that will enable advertisers to better target viewers based on how they interact with programming. The company is pushing personalization of its TV software through social features and new menus. Panasonic CEO Kazuhiro Tsuga told viewers at the Consumer Electronics Show, in Las Vegas that the next five years will transform more than the last 25. Panasonic also revealed its 20-inch 4K tablet that will be powered by Microsoft’s Windows 8.
