Back Stage, December 17th – In Tech Advice, How To Set Up a Film Shot, by Matthew Perkins. Whenever you are setting up a shot, there are lots of things to consider. What will the framing be? The angle? Where is the light source? So whether you’re shooting your own short, web series, reel, or audition, here are some tips to make sure the end product is perfect. A frame is most attractive when its subjects are composed along imaginary lines, which divide the image into thirds. You don’t need to perfectly align everything, just make sure your main subject isn’t always in the direct middle of the frame. Lighting, like other elements of composition helps you stress the importance of subjects. If it’s supposed to look like “real life,” keep it natural and clean. If you want something more stylized, then experiment and go nuts.

Hollywood Reporter, December 21st – The Dutch Introduce New Downloader-Friendly Piracy Law, by Scott Roxborough. The Netherlands again proved itself to be the most online-friendly nation in Europe. Dutch lawmakers choose to levy a so-called “private copy fee” on all electronic devices sold in the country. The new law means the Dutch will not go down the more punitive road taken by countries such as France, which have imposed “three strikes” laws that force ISPs to block Internet access to users found guilty of illegal downloading. Dutch rights holders estimated the new tax could initially bring in around $80 million to compensate for revenues lost through piracy.

Daily Variety, December 24th – In Film News, The 10 most significant showbiz deals of 2012, by Justin Kroll. Hollywood pulled the trigger on dozens of significant deals in 2012, a year peppered with optimism after an extended rough patch. Each deal signaled a shift in the way showbiz is operating in a post-recession world where home-video sales no longer prop up bottom lines and international markets emerge as the industry’s great hope. Here are the top three. 1. Disney buys LucasFilm, simultaneously announcing that it plans to release three new live-action “Star Wars” sequels. 2. Wanda, the Beijing-based giant bought the second-largest theater chain in the U.S., AMC. This was the biggest Chinese corporate takeover of an American company in history. 3. Lionsgate closes huge financing deal with JP Morgan and Bank of America, the biggest sack of bank coin any one studio had scored in recent memory. Not only will the restructured money save Lionsgate millions in the coming years, it cements the studio as a new player in the blockbuster game.
