Daily Variety, Monday, April 11th, “Net neutrality nix?” by Ted Johnson. Last Friday, the House of Representatives voted to repeal last years FCC rules that are called Net Neutrality. According to Representative Fred Upton, the vote to repeal gave voice to the American people by voting to ensure that the Internet remains open and free from unwarranted and unwelcome government regulation. He also called the Net Neutrality initiative by the FCC a power grab and characterized it as a government effort to take control of the Internet. Hollywood has often been caught in the middle of the Net Neutrality debate. Studios have been concerned about their ability to experiment with different types of specialized streaming services, as well as their efforts to combat piracy. The Writers Guild of America worries that the Internet will devolve into something resembling the platforms of cable TV, limiting opportunity for independents. However, if the repeal of the Net Neutrality rules are successful in the senate, President Obama promises to veto it, ensuring continued government regulation over the Internet, at least during his administration.
Hollywood Reporter, April 15th. Ryan Seacrest has been named the most powerful man in reality TV. From American Idol to Kardashians to his own future cable channel, the Emmy-winning producer drives pop culture 24/7. Now, he plans to expand his empire, move into scripted TV and take on a big role in the new NBCU. According to Simon Fuller, Ryan Seacrest absolutely has his finger on the pulse because he is talking to America every day through his radio show. Want to get more inside on reality TV and internet? As the competition among media heats up to capture the Hispanic audience in the U.S., Univision plans to up its game by rolling out dedicated telenovela, sports and news cable channels over the next 18 months. What’s more, Univision is creating a new commerce website. The key to the strategy is Univision’s partnership with Mexican programming powerhouse Televisa.
