The Real Skinny on Beer Bellies
Nutrition for Actors by certified sports nutritionist, Christine Avanti. Today let’s talk about The Real Skinny on Beer Bellies, from page 113 of Christine’s book, “Skinny Chicks Don’t Eat Salads…Stop starving, Start Eating…And Losing!”
Some people believe that beer causes beer bellies because of the maltose (sugar) content in beer. The logic is that wine won’t make you fat, but beer will because it is made of maltose. That would be correct if only it were that simple. Maltose is very high on the GI list—but beer is not pure maltose. Most beers contain only trace amounts of maltose since it is mostly fermented into alcohol. It’s calories that cause beer bellies. Plenty of men who have never had a drop of beer have beer bellies, and indeed the term beer belly itself is a misnomer.
